Skin is the biggest and the most visible organ of human body. Your entire body is enclosed under skin. Therefore, the state of the skin can reflect plenty about the state of the inside of the body.
Whether you are showbusiness or you just like to keep yourself healthy, it is essential to take good care of the skin. When your skin looks healthy, you look healthy. You look younger. People perceive you better. If your job involves dealing with people, you bet that along with good intentions, having a good and presentable self will position you for success.
So how do you take care of your skin? Here are the basic steps to follow to get the maximum returns from your efforts:
1. Sleep : Your sleep is the elixir of youth. Your body relaxes and repairs itself while you sleep. As per studies, 8 hours of sleep is a sufficient amount of sleep. But as per your work conditions and the level of being relaxed, you could also be done with lesser. The most important aspect is the time when you fall asleep. To keep your skin young, it is best if you have aligned your sleep-wake cycle with that of the Sun. This means you must fall asleep by 10 PM and get up by about 5-6 AM.
You will see that those who are working night shifts age faster just because of their irregular sleep-wake cycle even if they are getting 8-hours of sleep in the daytime.
Key takeaways: Align your sleep-wake cycle as per the Sun. Get adequate sleep in a dark and quiet room. Sleep for not less than 6-hours. Stay away from the stimulants such as tea or coffee before bedtime. Follow a good sleep routine (Click to read more about an optimum sleep routine)
2. Water : Water is found in a majority of your body. It is there in the blood, muscles, brain, skin, basically everywhere in different proportions. If you drink less water, your skin would not look moist and you will not able to maintain the elasticity. It is best if you drink adequate water. Because that will make your skin regain its elasticity and moistness. (Click here to know the optimum amount of water you must drink in a day.)
3. Dry massage before taking a bath : Dry massage, also known as Gharshana (pronounced ghar-shun-uh) in Ayurveda is an effective way to stimulate the blood capillaries in the skin. Dry massaging stimulates and triggers the cleansing process of lymphatic system. (Click on this link to know how you can do dry massage before taking bath.) Dry massage will exfoliate the skin and give you a healthier, glowing skin in a matter of days.
4. Sun exposure: Adequate Sun for the right amount of time is really good for the overall health of a person. The very first point I wrote about aligning your sleep cycle with the Sun, Sun exposure is essential for that (You can read more about how exposure to Sunlight could realign your circadian rhythm by clicking here).
It is found that controlled exposure to the UV rays can treat many skin conditions such as eczema, acne, psoriasis, and even jaundice (read more on this website). Please note that the exposure to the Sun must be gradual and at a time when the Sun rays are not too strong. Depending on the weather, an hour post sunrise up to 10 AM is a good time window to expose your body to the Sun. (To read step-by-step process about how you can expose yourself to the Sun, click this link).
Start with 4 minutes of Sunbath and increase 1 minute every two days till you reach a total of 15 minutes. A 15-minute exposure to the Sun is enough for your overall health.
5. Moisturizing: Once you make it a habit to subject your body to dry massage before bath, its good if you take care of your skin post bathing too. With the use of water and soap, the skin will not be able to retain its natural lubrication. Then once you wipe it down with a towel, skin will further be stripped of the lubrication.
Therefore, its good if you put a light moisturizer over your skin. Any seasonal oil such as coconut and mustard will also do.
6. Protein-rich food: Amino acids are the building block of protein. When you eat protein rich food, your body gets keratin. Keratin is a type of protein found in skin, hair and nails. Therefore, eat protein-rich food to have a better skin. (Read about vegetarian sources of protein you can eat).
7. Supplement with biotin: Biotin is essentially a vitamin B-7. It helps you to keep up your hair and skin health. You could either eat biotin-rich foods such as banana and milk, or you could take a good quality of biotin supplement. I would recommend you go with Nutrilite Biotin because they have their own certified organic farms, labs, and patented process for making supplements.
8. Stay away from Smoking: Smoking ages your body like nothing does. Smoking destroys hemoglobin which carries oxygen to the cells of the body. The cells of your body thrive on oxygen. The healthier your cells are, the better is your health.
9. Say no to alcohol: Apart from the liver wrecking effects of alcohol, another ill-effect of alcohol is that it dehydrates your body. We just understood how important water is to keep your skin healthy. Alcohol is a diuretic which means it will make you pee more often. With the urine, a lot of the essential vitamins and minerals will also pass your body.
You follow all the 9 mentioned steps, you will be a new person in a matter of weeks. You will see that more people complement you on how good you look. Your image will improve. You will feel good about yourself which will boost your confidence. And with confidence, you will be able to do a lot more. Take care of your skin and your work life, romantic life and personal life will improve.
