There are two neurotransmitters you should know of. Serotonin and melatonin.
Melatonin helps you sleep better. As the day gets darker, your body begins secretion of melatonin to put you in a state of quiet wakefulness preparing your body to sleep.
Serotonin is secreted when the eyes are exposed to Sunlight. The retina has special receptors that trigger the release of Serotonin. Serotonin wakes you up, alleviates your mood, regulates your digestion and other similar functions in the body. But most importantly, it is noted that Serotonin alleviates mood and improves the condition of depression.
Not just that, but it is found that Serotonin helps secretion of Melatonin and vice-versa. Therefore, if you are not able to get a good night's sleep, your condition will improve if you get exposed to morning and afternoon Sun. This will sync your body's circadian rhythm (sleep-wake cycle) as per the Sun.
Sleeping when it is dark and waking up with the rising Sun is the most congruent behavior which will have tremendous benefits to your overall mental and physical well-being. You must keep away all the electronic gadgets when it gets dark to prevent your eyes being exposed to the artificial light of the device mimicking Sunlight and preventing Melatonin from doing its job which is to help you fall asleep. Dim the lights of the house to fall asleep quicker and have a sound sleep. Then when the Sun rises, expose your body and eyes to the Sunlight to trigger and optimize the release of Serotonin so that it puts in is a state of alert wakefulness, improves your mood and regulates your digestions to give a great day ahead.
Wonder why Sun God is worshipped in many religions, including Sanatana! Now you know.
