There was music being played around me. And my attention would again and again go to the chaos of unstructured sound. I wasn't being still due to that.
There are situations on which you have immediate control. For e.g. noise happening inside your house. Then there are situations which you will find that you don't have immediate control. For e.g. loudspeaker blaring in the neighborhood. Now there is a solution to prevent people from using loudspeakers. That solution could be immediate where if the loudspeaker is blaring post the permissible time limit, then you could call up the authorities and do something about it, or you yourself go and speak to the person playing the loudspeaker. But if the loudspeaker is blaring in the daytime, which the society permits people to do; then stopping it requires comprehensive education of the society, which takes time and meticulous planning. Then in that case there are only few things you could do.
In such a case where there is unpleasant noise, you could either shut the doors of your home, or if that's not possible, tune into the patches of time when there is silence. The latter strategy relates more to wisdom. Every segment of time in which there is noise, there are patches of silence as well. What you will do is tune yourself into the patches of silence. Really focus yourself and tune yourself in the silent moment. Really savor them and appreciate them. Thank your good fortune that you can observe those moments of silence and you will begin to feel elated when those patches of silence will be there.
This practice will train your perspective to focus on the things you like and appreciate, and selectively ignore those that you don't like and appreciate. Soon, you will see a habit being formed where you will be focused on those things that you appreciate more. This will enhance the quality of your life as you will be less irked by your environment and more content with the events happening around you.
So remember the mantra: When its noisy, tune yourself in the silence.
